Common questions
How do I calculate GST in Australia?
To add GST, multiply the price by 1.1 (price × 10% = GST). To remove GST from a GST-inclusive total, divide the total by 11 to get the GST, or divide by 1.1 to get the price without GST.
Why divide by 11 and not take 10% off?
Because GST is 10% of the price before GST. On a $110 total, the GST is $10 (110 ÷ 11), not $11. Taking 10% off the total gives the wrong answer.
Can I use a different rate?
Yes. Change the rate field, for example to 15% for New Zealand GST. The calculator remembers nothing and works fully in your browser.
Is this tax advice?
