FAQ

Common questions

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Both use the same profit. Markup compares profit to the cost; margin compares profit to the selling price. A $60 cost sold for $100 is a 66.7% markup but a 40% margin.

How do I find the price for a 30% margin?

Divide the cost by (1 − margin). For a $70 cost and a 30% margin: 70 ÷ 0.7 = $100. Adding 30% to the cost ($91) only gives a 23% margin, which is a common pricing mistake.

How is the hourly rate worked out?

We add the income you want to your yearly business costs and a safety buffer, then divide by the hours you can actually bill: working weeks × billable hours per week. Admin, quoting and travel time are not billable, so most people bill 20–30 hours a week.

Should my prices include GST?

In Australia, prices shown to consumers must include GST if you are registered. Turn on “Add GST” to see the price your customer pays.
