Common questions
What are UTM parameters?
Small tags added to the end of a link, like ?utm_source=facebook. They do not change the page. They tell Google Analytics where the visitor came from.
Which fields do I need?
Source, medium and campaign are the important three. Term and content are optional, for example to compare two ad images.
Why use lowercase?
Analytics treats Facebook and facebook as two different sources, which splits your reports. Keep “tidy” on and the tool makes everything lowercase with hyphens.
Should I use UTM links on my own website?
No. Only use them on links from outside: ads, social posts, emails, QR codes. UTM links between your own pages restart the visit and mess up your data.
